Two Door Locks – Only One Key

One House Key for Both Doors

If your locks are different from front to back or perhaps your doorknob lock differs from your deadbolt lock, and you want to simplify so that one key will work for both, the good news is that you only need to purchase one new lock– NOT two! Here is what to do:

  • grab a Phillips screwdriver and remove screws on the inside of the lock (very close to knob)
  • remove the screws from the striker plate
  • pull the latch out of the inner edge of door
  • pull the lock out of the door (which preferably is one that is newer and works well) to Ace Hardware or a store with a locksmith
  • tell the store locksmith what you intend to do
  • buy another lock of the same type (Schlage is higher quality than Kwik-Set, but remember to stick with the same type of lock you already have)
  • get the new lock rekeyed to work with the key you have. (Most stores will rekey your new lock for free as long as you purchase the new lock from them)
  • take it home and replace th
  • e lock you took to the store
  • remove and replace the lock you no longer want
